Liberia Advances UN Security Council Bid with High-Level Visit to São Tomé and Príncipe
As part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to garner broad-based support for Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term, a delegation from the Republic of Liberia visited São Tomé and Príncipe on May 19, 2025. The delegation, led by Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Toga Gayewea McIntosh, and including Assistant Minister and Chief of Staff Madam Saran Kaba Jones, held a meeting with His Excellency Carlos Manuel Vila Nova, President of the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe.

During the meeting, Ambassador McIntosh formally delivered a Special Message and Letter from His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia. The message conveyed Liberia’s formal request for São Tomé and Príncipe’s invaluable support in the upcoming UNSC elections scheduled for June 3, 2025 in New York. Ambassador McIntosh emphasized Liberia’s commitment to multilateralism, peace, and regional cooperation, and reaffirmed that Liberia, if elected, would serve as a strong voice for Africa.

His Excellency President Vila Nova received the message with appreciation and commended Liberia’s initiative. He assured the delegation that the request would be given positive consideration. The President further underscored the critical importance of Africa securing a permanent seat on the Security Council and expressed hope that Liberia, if elected, would advance this collective cause. He also welcomed the opportunity to deepen bilateral relations between Liberia and São Tomé and Príncipe. The Liberian delegation is scheduled to continue its diplomatic mission in Libreville, Gabon.
