Liberia Champions Climate Resilience and Forest Protection at High-Level Negotiations in Germany

A high-level Liberian delegation led by Hon. Jeddi Armah, Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a technical team of climate negotiators from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia, is making a strong case for sustainable forest management, regional collaboration, and climate resilience at the ongoing African Group of Negotiators (AGN) meetings in Germany. Deputy Minister Armah highlighted the significance of Liberia’s participation at this global forum, saying, “Our presence here reflects Liberia’s proactive role in shaping a just and equitable global climate agenda. As a forest-rich country, we are advocating not just for ourselves, but for all developing nations whose voices must be amplified in the global dialogue.” `The delegation, which also includes Representatives Anthony F. Williams and Emmanuel Dahn, is actively engaging with multilateral development banks, climate investors, and representatives from the Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN). Strategic discussions are also underway with progressive forested countries including Suriname and Honduras, underscoring a united front among nations on the frontline of the climate crisis.

The delegation emphasized Liberia’s unwavering commitment to advancing nature-based solutions and securing increased financial and technical support for its climate action agenda. A focal point of the advocacy is the urgent need to accelerate the implementation of Liberia’s critical climate resilience infrastructure most notably the long-stalled West Point and Sinoe County Coastal Defense Projects. “We are in Germany to ensure Liberia’s priorities are heard loud and clear, particularly on climate finance and coastal protection, where delays have significantly impacted vulnerable communities,” said Representative Anthony F. Williams. “We are here to build momentum and secure commitments.”

Representatives Williams and Dahn are holding high-level negotiations with major international climate financiers, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Conservation International (CI), and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The lawmakers are pushing for the expedited release of funds and the removal of bureaucratic bottlenecks to fast-track the implementation of Liberia’s climate project pipeline. The Liberian delegation’s strong engagement at the AGN meetings sends a clear message: Liberia stands ready to lead on forest protection, regional climate cooperation, and resilience building. With its rich biodiversity and vulnerable coastal zones, the country is calling for targeted international support that translates into real, on the ground impact for its people.
