The President of the Republic of Liberia, Her Excellency Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has issued a Proclamation declaring Saturday as the day for the recognition of the International Year of Cooperatives to be observed as a Working Holiday throughout the Republic.
According to a Foreign Ministry release issued in Monrovia on Friday, the Cooperative Development Agency (CDA) and the Cooperative Movement in Liberia have selected Saturday, July 7, 2012 as the official day for the recognition of international cooperatives.
The release says the International Year of Cooperatives will be celebrated under the Theme: “Cooperatives Build Better World”.
The Proclamation calls on the Ministries of Agriculture and Youth and Sports, national and international organizations concerned, and the joint Organizing Committee comprising the Liberia Credit Union National Association (LCUNA) to join the CDA to execute appropriate programs befitting the occasion.
The United Nations General Assembly’s declaration of 2012 has set aside July 3, 2012 as the day for the international recognition of the International Year of Cooperatives with a timeline which runs up to December 31, 2012.
The Proclamation says the intent of the celebration of the day is to highlight the contributions of the cooperatives to the socio-economic development, particularly their impacts on poverty reduction, empowerment and social integration and socio-economic empowerment of all citizens as well as strengthening the establishment of appropriate policies by which Government continues to support the National Cooperative Agency.
