President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has sent a message of condolence to His Majesty, King Felipe VI of Spain, in the aftermath of a terrorist attack in Las Ramblas, Barcelona, Spain, on Thursday, August 17, 2017.

Media reports indicate that at least 13 people are dead and more than 100 injured after a van careened through a crowd in one of Barcelona’s tourist hotspots, Las Ramblas.  It’s Spain’s worst terror attack since 2004 Madrid train bombings and the latest example of attackers using vehicles to inflict terror.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, in the condolence message to the Government and people of the Kingdom of Spain, President Sirleaf said to King Felipe VI, “This is indeed a difficult period for us all, particularly the people of Spain; because any evil perpetrated against one member of the international community affects us all,” adding that Liberia joins other peace loving nations of the world in condemning and denouncing this brutal and callous act which has no place in our society.

On behalf of the Government and people of Liberia and in her own name, the Liberian leader expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and prayed for healing and early recovery of the injured.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Spain against this cowardly attack,” the Liberian leader continued, stressing, “As we keep you in our prayers, it is our hope that the world will remain united and relentless in its fight against terrorism in all its forms and shapes.”

President Sirleaf prayed that God will grant His Majesty, King Felipe VI and compatriots the fortitude to endure this period of grief.
