Liberia, Germany Sign Cooperation Agreement

The Government of the Republic Liberia and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany have signed a Financial Cooperation Agreement to undertake several developmental projects in the country. The ceremony took place on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Olubanke King-Akerele, signed on behalf of the Liberian Government while  German Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Liberia, Her Excellency Iise Lindemann-Macha, signed for her government.

Speaking at the ceremony, Foreign Minister King-Akerele said the signing of the Agreement is in fulfillment of an earlier pledge made by the German Chancellor, Her Excellency Angela Makel during her visit to Liberia.
Minister King-Akerele expressed deep appreciation of the Government and people of Liberia to Germany for the continue support toward Liberia’s development and the waiver of Liberia’s debts.

Minister King-Akerele further indicated that the Agreement represents Germany’s commitment to Liberia’s recovery program and the strengthening of the long bilateral and favorable relationship that have subsisted between the two countries.

As one of its contributions to Liberia’s post-war reconstruction and development, the Government of Germany is contributing 19 Million Euros to the World Bank Multi Donor Trust Fund.

For his part, Ambassador Lindemann-Macha recommitted his government’s support to Liberia’s reconstruction and development, and recounted the long outstanding cooperation and friendship subsisting between Germany and Liberia. She assured that Germany will do whatever it can to assist in the development of Liberia. 

Projects under the agreement include rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads, latrines and bridges as well as women empowerment, among others.

Meanwhile, the ceremony was attended by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs including Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador William V. S. Bull; Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, Cllr. Krubo B. Kollie; Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Affairs, Hon. Elisa Shoniyin and Hon.Josephus M. Gray, Assistant Foreign Minister for Public Affairs and an official of the German Embassy near Monrovia.
