The Foreign Minister of Liberia, Her Excellency Olubanke King-Akerele, says the Government of Liberia does not foresee any significant change in relations between Liberia and the United States under the new U.S. Administration.

Minister King-Akerele made the disclosure when she spoke in an interview with a local journalist from one of the prominent newspapers in Monrovia.

Minister King-Akerele said both Liberia and the United States share a commonality of views on many international issues, including the fight against terrorism, adding that more importantly, the two countries enjoy longstanding historical and special ties which pre-dates the independence of Liberia in 1847.

She said as a post-conflict country, under the leadership of Her Excellency President Ellen Johnson-sirleaf, Liberia recommitted itself to the promotion of good governance and respect for the rule of law, saying that its development agenda is aimed at reducing poverty and improving the quality of life of the Liberian people.

She said the Johnson-Sirleaf Administration’s commitment has received widespread international support, especially bipartisan support from the U.S. Congress and Government, adding that the Government is confident that this cooperation will continue under the incoming Administration.

“We look forward to working closely with the American President, Barrack Obama and the U.S. Congress in strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation which have traditionally existed between our two countries and peoples to our mutual benefit”; the Liberian Foreign Minister noted.
