Foreign Minister Ngafuan Signs book of condolence for the late Tom Kamara

Monrovia, June 21, 2012: Foreign Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan Thursday signed the books of condolence for the late Tom Kamara at the office of the New Democrat and the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) respectively, both located on Clay Street.

The late Kamara who died at age 63 in Brussels, Belgium while en route to Holland for treatment was the Publisher of the New Democrat Newspaper.

At the New Democrat office, Foreign Minister Ngafuan also presented his written elegy to the Publisher’s widow, Rachel Kamara, after he signed the book of condolence.

A Foreign Ministry release quotes a passage from the Minister’s elegy as saying that “while on stage, you [Kamara] danced excellently with a weapon louder than the boom of the howitzer, sharper than the blades of the sword. Yes, with your pen you were untiring, unyielding, and uncompromising in the struggle to bring social justice and democracy to your Motherland”.

The Foreign Minister also remembered the late veteran journalist as a truth-writer who did so fearlessly and naked: “Tom, even with bullets to your breast, you wrote the truth-fierce, naked, and pointed. In your lines, we felt the philosophy of Socrates, the militancy of Mandela, and the audacity of Albert Porte. Tom, you have gone to meet the great comrades who, like you, lived and died so that Liberia could live.”

In response, Mrs. Kamara thanked the Minister for identifying with her family in such time of bereavement and grieve.

The Minister then crossed the street to the National Headquarters of the PUL where he also signed the Union’s book of condolence in remembrance of the “fallen mighty pen”.

The late Kamara will be buried Saturday, June 23, 2012 in Brewerville outside Monrovia following a night of wake-keeping the previous night of Friday, June 22, 2012.
